TMI, I'm sure...

ahhh.. Figgy Figgy Figgy!
about a week ago, I caught him eating something that was stuck in his mouth. He was using his foot pushing on the side of his face and struggling with it what ever it was. I couldnt get his darn mouth open, and then when I did, what ever it was was gone. I was concerned, but he seemed ok. then a couple days later i realized he wasnt eating. but Frannie was turning her nose up at food a bit too, so I thought maybe they had a bug, or the food was no good, so kept offering different foods.. She finally was eating, but he wasnt. Then he just wasnt acting himself so Monday I took him to the vets. He kept him for the day and did some xrays with barium. there was nothing absolutely conclusive but the way the dye sat at the bottom of his stomach made the vet think that something could be there. But he told me that hes been wrong before and that he could open him up and not find anything. The barium seemed to be passing through his system regardless. I brought him home for the night and returned him in the morning for another xray to see if it looked any better. he still wasnt eating any cat food or treats at that time. He did however eat a little bit of ham in the morning before I took him. It was still inconclusive but he gave me two choices; one he did the surgery.. or two I take him to a specialist who can scope him, which cost more then if Jim did the surgery and he still could have to have it. I of course was sick about this. Not to mention planning on going away for the weekend! I decided to let him open him up. but, he didnt have time to do it until today late afternoon or early evening.
So again, I brought him home. Last night he perked up and began eating again. but he did not use the litter box. He went in and dug around but did not go. which of course concerned me. He obviously felt better though. He slept with me all night, (right by my head, he uses my face or neck as a pillow and purs in my ear! (its actually a little annoying.. but I adore him so its ok!) He has a habit of licking my eye lids and face when hes loveable and content which he hadnt been doing, but at 4:15 this morning he was all about waking me up for some attention! Both cats got up at 4:30 and I was hoping that maybe figgy had to go to the litter box.. but he didnt, instead I found them both chomping away at catfood in the kitchen. I checked the litter box to see if I had missed anything, which I hadnt and stirred it up a little.. (they love it when its just been cleaned out!) Figgy came in and scratched around and did nothing. I was disappointed and went back to bed. Got up an hour ago and figgy wanted to eat again. he even ate some kitty snacks that he wouldnt eat earlier in the week. and then He used the litter box! not alot.. but he used it none the less. Now.. I dont know what to do about the vet.
I suppose I will call him and tell him about how well fig is doing, but I do think the cat is constipated!
so that is my figgy story.. please..Pray PRay Pray that he does not need to have any surgery!
hugs to you all!

I had the same thing happen to my Lexi. She started feeling better but we had the surgery and the vet didn't find anything. Sometimes the barium helps move things along. There is(or was) a tube of stuff called laxatone for kitty constipation and hairballs. When I worked for a vet we used it and cats seemed to like it. I think it was fish flavored.

I hope your kitty feels better. Maybe you should wait a day before the surgery to see if it clears up on its own. Hope it works out for you!

Viv, I sure hope Figgy is okay and doesnt need surgery. Just went through the same thing with my moms dog. Thankfully, he passed whatever it was.

I swear kitties are as demanding as children. hehe I hope they are fine, and don't need surgery. I was jealous of your ice cream sundae. I haven't had sugar in 6 weeks, I'm dying for chocolate chip cookie dough. Have a fabulous day.

Oh, Vivian,
How is Figgy now? It sounds like he's doing a bit better. It can be so hard to tell with cats. I hope he passes whatever it was and that he continues to improve. Your cats are such sweeties
Please take care, my friend. I know you are worried.
Love,
Cindy

Vivian,

My Kiska ate some meat netting one time, and they gave a laxative/or softener like med. to help pass the leftover, and he did. But, when you don't know what the item is, it's a little harder to determine.

My instincts from your info bets that it's passing through.

I am not sure if my Kiska ate something, for he's been throwing up. He's doing some probiotics, and anti-biotics. But there was mention of stomach cancer & pancreatitis ,(which Kippy had). Arghh!

You can give a simple acidophilus to the kitties daily, which will ward off illness and help the stomach, making it easier to pass things when necessary.

These stay- inside kitties are just getting into too many silly things that kitties in the past just would never get into. Boredom I guess. I think it has reached critical mass, because I hear so much of this. My friend Debbie's cat ate a needle and thread, (they did surgery) ,& there were no problems.

Prayers-Lydia
